Jerald Florence: As a Computer Engineering undergraduate, you will undoubtedly be following a mostly EE curriculum for the first 2 years followed by 2 more years doing more specialized study into computers. As my university (UT Austin, ~#10 in the nation for CompEng), I was given a choice of 2 "tech areas" which offered several courses I got to choose. I choose Embedded Systems, and Software Engineering. Both courses were heavy in the hows and whys of computers, and to do that you have to understand the hardware (caching, branch prediction, etc)...Show more
Loise Mausser: Maybe try shooting out emails to local companies (or national ones) where you know they hire hardware engineers and asking if they can put you in contact with a hardware engineer to talk to. You could also try looking through an alumni listing at a local college or university.
