Loriann Carrigan: I have been in IT since I left school some (shocking even to me) 17 years ago! Over time I have progressed into networking and firewall management, now currently working for an NHS-like institution.I am responsible for managing a 100+ Cisco device network spread across nearly 40 locations. The job is fantastic. You need to know about Cisco IOS configuration, VLAN tagging, trunking, WAN / Leased Line links, the full works of networking to maintain an organisation this big - so the challenges are there to keep the job interesting day after day. Also there is likely to be a need to understand firewalls to protect both the perimeter of the network and to host DMZ based systems (usually email and web servers, but in a hospital Radiological systems have their own DMZ as well). In the future it is likely that, with VoIP as an emerging technology, I will take on that due to its network-connected aspect. So overall, as a career move, I would highly recommend purs! uing it. There are plenty of "desktop support" jobs for junior staff and "application support / development" for more seasoned staff but networking is more niche and every bit essential to any organisation. And every nation has large banking companies - even Africa, I'm sure!Good luck with your future career!...Show more
